Nicolas Potel grew up at the Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in Volnay, where his father managed operations. Following his father’s untimely death and the subsequent sale of the estate, Potel was left without a vineyard in 1997. However, with the support of Burgundy winemakers, he founded Maison Nicolas Potel in 1998, using purchased grapes and wines. Potel developed a signature style through traditional winemaking techniques, including spontaneous fermentation, minimal sulfur use, and gentle aging in Burgundian barrels. Maison Nicolas Potel quickly gained recognition for producing full-bodied, balanced wines from Côte d’Or and beyond, with a focus on terroir expression and vintage style. Despite Potel’s departure in 2008, the label continues to produce around 300,000 bottles annually, maintaining its reputation for quality wines at accessible prices.
